Potter Burns Elementary School - Update |
Potter Burns Elementary School will be closed through Friday, May 31.
Potter Burns Elementary School, which has been closed since a 6’ x 10’ ceiling section gave way in a basement office/classroom Wednesday afternoon, will be closed for the four school days following the Memorial Day holiday. It is scheduled to reopen for classes as usual on Monday morning, June 3.
Tests were conducted by the independent testing lab, R.I. Analytical Laboratories Inc., to see if there was any asbestos in the plaster and gypsum ceiling materials. The tests came back negative.
Engineers conducted a thorough examination of ceilings in all rooms in the school. The ceiling system is plaster over gypsum board that is nailed to the joists. If the nails loosen, the gypsum and plaster can detach from the ceiling. As a preventative measure, ceilings in some classrooms will be completely removed. Others will have a ceiling stabilizing strapping system installed.
The Superintendent has notified the Commissioner’s office and has asked that four of the six school days missed be waived. An announcement regarding make-up days is anticipated by Tuesday.
We wish to again express thanks for your understanding and patience. Nothing is more important than the safety of our students and employees. The preventative work done in the week ahead will ensure that students and teachers return classrooms deemed safe by the engineers and inspectors.
